A good friend of mine who I haven’t seen in far too long is having her 21st birthday today! And because handmade gifts are always the best, I made her a couple of pairs of crochet earrings!
Actually, I only just made the second pair (the purple ones). The first pair, I made for her a while ago when I first started learning to crochet, but I never got around to finishing them because I didn’t have earwires (silly excuse). I don’t remember where I got the pattern for the first pair, or if it was something that I made up, so unfortunately I can’t give you a pattern for those…
But the purple ones I’d love to share.
Birthday Earrings
materials:
1.0 mm crochet hook
size 20 thread (I used Flora. It’s very stiff and perfect for earrings)
two earwires
needlenose pliers (tweezers work okay in a pinch)
starch or water/glue mixture for blocking
* * *
Chain 8 and join in a loop
Round 1: Ch 3 (count as first dc), 24 dc in loop, sl st to first dc
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 5, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc* around until 1 dc away from first st, ch 2, dc in first st.
Round 3: Ch 3 (count as first dc), 3 dc in same space, *sc in next space, 4 dc in next space, ch 1, make 3-ch picot, ch 1, 4 dc in same space* 5 times, sc in next space, 4 dc in next space, ch 1, make 6-ch picot, ch 1, sl st to first dc.
Cut thread and weave in ends.
Wash and block gently to even out the stitches. Spray with starch or soak in a glue and water solution. Let dry, or if you’re impatient like me, gently press with an iron under a handkerchief on medium heat.
Open the bottom loop on an earwire with the pliers and slip the 6-ch picot into the loop. Close the loop and repeat for the other earring. Admire.
I love them. I have a silver thread that will make a glittery pair and they will be perfect for christmas. Thanks so much.
these are absolutely beautiful !!!! Thanks so much for the pattern. I am going to make a pair for my daughters…Pam
i’d like to see someone wearing them to see how big they actually are.
Thanks for the comment!
If you make them with size 20 thread and a 1.0mm hook, they come out to be about 1.25 inches.
I’m having a hard time going from the second to the third round. No matter what way I try it, it’s just not making sense with the ch3, then 3 dc etc. Am I missing something??
Thanks for trying my pattern! Going from row 2 to 3 is very simple. At the end of row 2, you ch 2 and then from there dc in the first stitch so that your live stitch is in the middle of the little arch that you’ve just created. When you start row 3, you are working into the little arches (spaces) that you’ve created in row 2. Ch 3, and then the next 3 dcs go into the same arch-space that is right underneath the ch 3 (does that make sense?) Then you sc into the next arch, and do 4 dcs in the arch after that, etc. etc.
Does that make sense? I hope that helps!
I just finished a pair in gold metallic knit-cro-sheen, a vintage/older spool from an estate sale… i will post them on my Ravelry page now! Thanks for this pattern, so much fun!
[…] be coming soon and I’m very excited about it!! Here are some pictures!! Bonny Blue Earrings Birthday Earrings Can’t wait till parts get here so I can get started on it!! I’ll try out some patterns […]
Those Earrings are so beautiful and adorable….
These are beautiful, but then everything done by hand especially crochet is always beautiful. I made earings of pineapples they look great especially when I added silver string to one pair and gold to the other. I think many will like this project, plus you can make them any color you wish. The thinner the thread the smaller they’ll be of course and vise versa. Enjoy.
Perfect for my birthday in a few days!! Thank you!!!!!
WHEN I TRY TO PRINT THIS PATTERN, I CAN’T PRINT THE PHOTOS. CAN YOU HELP?
CAN YOU HELP ME PRINT THE PHOTOS?
NANCY
Hi Nancy,
I personally have no problem printing it with the photos… they show up in the print preview (I’m using Firefox). If you are still having trouble, you could try copying and pasting the pattern into Word and printing it from there.
Alternately, you could save the pattern as a PDF file and open it with Adobe Acrobat. When you open the print menu, there should be a button at the bottom that says “PDF.” Choose “Save as PDF,” name the file, and save it to your computer.
For the second snowflake: I used a 10 hook and 20 thread.
chain 8 slip stitch to form ring,
chain 3 {represents first dc} chain 2, {stitch 1 dc chain 2} nine more times around then slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 to complete that round,
chain 3 {first dc} stitch 1 dc in the first chain two loop {two dc are in each loop}, chain 10 stitch 2 dc in next chain 2 loop and also in the next chain 2 loop then chain 10 repeat this all around then slip stitch in the top of the first chain 3 in this round.
stitch 7 dc chain 3 7dc in each chain 10 loop repeating this step for each chain 10 loop slip stich in the top of the first chain 3 in this row . Cut the thread with a 1/2 inch tail slip stich and pull the thread all the way through the loop then weave it under the row of dc to hide it. Block and stiffen with Stiffy as glue will make the flake turn yellow and you know what they say about yellow snow!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I WAS ABLE TO PRINT THE PHOTO WITH YOUR ADVISE AND AM NOW MAKING THEM AND ADDING SEED BEADS AS I GO. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL!!
CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT FLORA IS AND WHERE I MIGHT FIND IT?
THANK YOU,
NANCY
Hi Nancy,
I’m glad you were able to print the photos. I usually order Flora and other brands of crochet cotton from Lacis in Berkeley, CA. Here is their website: http://lacis.com/catalog/. Their website is a little hard to navigate, but if you click “All Products” and then “Materials,” crochet cottons should be under “Needlework, DMC, etc.”
Good luck!
I was searching for the perfect quick B’day gift for a friend of mine..
I really love this..
Thank you so much for the pattern! It was really easy to follow and they got really pretty!
I love all of the earrings on the list, but some of the patterns list the hook to use as a 1.0 mm rather than a number i.e. 5, however, most of my hooks are old, which I inherited from my mother (some even have to price the price on them – one says 10 cents). Is there any way that I can get a list of the sizes i.e.7 a d the comparable mm ? It would make it much easier when doing some of these projects. Thank you.
There are many lists available if you do a google search. Unfortunately for smaller hooks, the conversion is more of an estimate because it depends on the brand, age, country of origin, etc. Basically though, 1.0 mm hook is going to be between US 10 – 12. It also depends on how tight you crochet. So basically just try things out and see what works for you!

Im have difficulty with the pattern..what does this indicate *….*
Like in many crochet patterns, it means that you repeat the sequence between the asterisks until you’re almost at the end of the row. The last set of instructions after the asterisks show you how to finish the row and connect it to the beginning.
I can’t find that thread anywhere nearby, I would like to get some I don’t have to special order. any suggestions?

Took me a while to figure out, but I finally managed to make a pair using your pattern. I’ve been crocheting several different earrings, and I posted pictures here where you can see the ones I made from this pattern, too.

Very simple pattern and thank you for sharing…
When you get to step 3 (3 dc in same space), should you turn before doing this step? Because when I didn’t, my chains were lopsided, so I turned my work. Right or wrong?
And when you say space, you mean the loop?
Hi Lorraine, Thank you for trying my pattern! Sorry my instructions were not clear… there is no need to turn the work, since this pattern is worked in the round. Also, make sure to do the first Ch 3 at the beginning of the row, so that there is enough space for your 3 dc (in the loop). As for your second comment, the last 6 picot st, ch 1, should bring you right back around to the beginning of the row. Put the sl st in the top of the ch 3 to finish the row.
Also, after the last step, where you do a 6 picot st, ch 1, should there be 4 dc as the next step before sl st? It didn’t look right to me until I did that. Just wondering.
Hello, I just started using the small needle and thread. I learned to crochet using the hook and yarn. So needless to say it was a bit of a challenge for using a small needle and thread. I have gotten better over the last several months. I just tried these earrings in a cream with gold thread woven through it. They look really nice. It took a couple of tries but I finally got it right. So sorry to hear that you do not remember the pattern for the green ones, I like them a lot. Thanks for the pattern.
Thanks for the great pattern. It is well written and easy to follow. I used some thread I had from Romania and a 1.30 mm hook. The earrings turned out really nice!
Love the earrings but where in the world did you find size 20 cotton thread in colors? I have scoured the planet via the net to no avail. Help please….really want to try these patterns. Thank you.
